DePuy Hip Replacement

DePuy, an orthopedic and neurosurgery company founded more than a century ago, manufactures medical devices used in hip replacements and hip resurfacing operations. The company, acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 1998, has produced two metal-on-metal products used in the operations: the DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System and the DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System.

The products have been used globally, but unfortunately many patients have experienced negative side effects or injury as a result of undergoing surgery to have these hip devices implanted in them. In some cases, the hip replacements have failed to work at all. This led to the 2010 recall of DePuy’s AS™ XL Acetabular Hip System and the DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System.
